Dawn's Favorite Things: The Better-Faster Academy
I’m always skeptical when someone refers to an experience as “life-changing.” Very few decisions in our lives change anything. But some do. For example, you can read here about how my decision to visit a friend’s church led to a twenty-plus year marriage. So I’m not exaggerating when I say for me, Becca’s class was life changing.
It started with her Write Better-Faster Class. When the other two members of my writing tribe signed up, I skipped on it. I already write fast. I didn’t need a class to show me how to do that. I needed a class to tell me how to get my life back in order and my writing career on track.
My friends finished the class and basically stood over me until I signed up for the next session. Write Better-Faster isn’t another class about fast drafting, not editing as you go, and vomiting words until you hit your daily count. It’s about finding out everything you can about yourself (through brain science) and applying that to create your process.
A few things I learned about myself:
I’m super extroverted. I talk all the time, even when I’m alone. First, that’s normal (whew!) Second, when it comes to brainstorming and strategizing plot problems, I received the most benefit from talking (actually speaking words, not texting/messaging/emailing) with another humans.
I’m very high stability. That means if my world is out-of-whack (either physically or emotionally), I have to get that in order before I can write. That simple revelation freed me to let go of writing until I could sort through my late mother’s things. Something I’d been struggling with for months.
I’m high communication and high strategic. Those are skills I use every single day in my business.
Speaking of my business, when I finally admitted to myself that I missed the helping aspect of teaching and writing alone wasn’t fulfilling that for me. I scheduled a a one-on-one with Becca to discuss my options, particularly if what I wanted to do (editing and story coaching) fit with my personality. (Spoiler alert: It does and I LOVE it!)
