Dear Writer, Are You In Burnout?

The industry is moving at a breakneck pace and writers are burning out everywhere. Write fast, write first, write every day... it's all taking its toll.

Some of us are built for this speed. Some of us are not. How do you know if you're in burnout? And if you are in it, how do you get out of it? Is it avoidable?

Becca Syme has been working with thousands of fiction and nonfiction authors, and has seen the burnout firsthand. This book is based on a popular series of videos from her authortube channel, The QuitCast, where she outlined the process of burnout, how to understand it and how to survive it.

This is a topic that, if it's part of your journey, will not go away until you face it. If you are in burnout, or are afraid you're headed for it, please get this book. It's time to face the pit together.

Becca is amazing.

I’ve posted before about how her classes changed everything for me. I am so honored to work with her on this book as well the first installment of this series—Dear Writer, You Need To Quit.

It is not an exaggeration that I edited this with tears in my eyes. I wish someone would have handed it to me my last year of teaching, especially when I told my husband I’d been asked to give a presentation about educator burnout and his response was, “Are they looking for someone to use as an example?”

Even though it is directed at writers, the knowledge and strategies are really applicable to anyone in the burnout pit. I may order a case of copies and hand them out as Christmas presents. There are so many people that I know personally and professionally that I just want to push a copy across the table and say, “Trust me. You need to read this.”

For those of you who are struggling to write but don’t know why,

who are frustrated with fatigue and never being able to accomplish as much as you used to,

who are making yourself write even though there’s no joy left in it for you,

who are asking yourself, “Do I really want to keep doing this?”,

I highly recommend Dear Writer, Are You In Burnout? Because even though it might be scary to find the answer to that question, that pit is lonely place to be and being honest with yourself about the situation is the first step to find a way out.
