This year I committed to Roni Loren's Read and Watch Challenge. (You can get all the details here. ) Basically, every month has a word and the reader finds books and movies/TV shows based on the word.
The word for April was TIME.
I am so excited to bring you By the Hour ! This is the second book in Roni's new Pleasure Principle series. The first book, Off The Clock is a finalist for Best Erotic Romance of the Year from the Romance Writers of America. While I am a HUGE fan of Roni's Loving on the Edge series. This new series, described as Grey's Anatomy with more sex, provides a refreshing change of scenery and characters while keeping Roni's style of humor and heat.
Back to By the Hour, here'e the blurb:
Dr. Elle McCray has a plan. Work hard. Be the best. And do it alone. After her ex-husband’s betrayal, she’s learned being feared is a hell of a lot easier than being humiliated. So when trouble personified, Lane Cannon, dares to flirt with her, she shuts him down cold. Too gorgeous. Too cocky. And his job as The Grove’s sexual surrogate is to sleep with patients. No, thank you.
Former escort Lane Cannon has spent enough years with people looking down on him. Stupid. Trailer trash. Rent boy. He’s heard it all. He’s worked too hard to shed his past to let some haughty doctor cut him down. But something about Elle’s ice queen act has his dominant instincts perking up and his body taking notice. He can’t walk away.
After an evening of verbal sparring turns into a night of steamy hate sex, Lane’s ready for round two. But Elle proposes a business deal. How better to keep things strictly physical than to pay him for his services?
Lane wants her, not her money. But he’ll play along in exchange for one thing—all the control. It’s only supposed to be a dirty little fling between colleagues, but these two are about to learn a lesson in love…by the hour.
If you read Off The Clock, Elle McCray might seem like an unlikely heroine but By the Hour lets you peer through the crack in her armor to see the complicated woman inside. As her story unfolded, I wanted to slap the people who'd made her so protective her of heart, then take Elle out for a margarita and some girl time.
And, Lane...Lane will melt your heart and heat up everything else. Like Elle, he's so much more than what he lets others see. The good-looking, laid-back guy who has made a career of making women feel good about themselves is facing his own challenges. The dynamic between Lane and Elle as they navigate their attraction, career and relationships is sizzling and captivating.
That is what always draws me into Roni Loren's books. She writes authentic characters facing problems layered with complicated nuances and emotion as well as heart-racing love scenes that are a perfect mix of hot, playful and romantic.
I recommend this book to all Roni Loren fans and anyone looking to read her for the first time. It is set in the same world as Off the Clock, but stands on its own as a story. If you haven't read Off the Clock, you will still fully appreciate By the Hour without feeling like you're missing something.
Fair warning: These are erotic romances and it is Roni Loren writing. There's a complex plot that will draw you in and keep the pages turning, but those sex scenes will have you trying to figure out reasons to get yourself admitted to The Grove.
