Writer Advice Rebellion: What If You Fly?

When someone points out they're scared of the plunge, instead of telling them the joys of the soar they may or may not experience, maybe show them how to tie that safety rope.

"What if I fall? Oh, my darling. What if you fly?"

I realize this isn't actual "advice."

This is from a lovely poem by Erin Hanson. I am sure she is delightful and had only the best intentions when putting this out into the world. It is an inspiring quote.

Get out there. Try it. Jump off that ledge and see what happens. It could be something amazing...or you could come crashing down.

That's what bothers me about this advice.

It flippantly overlooks the inherent fear or the possibility of real consequences.

I see it used to push writers out of their comfort zone (sometimes encouraging steps they are clearly not ready for.)

What if I fall?

Well, as someone who ended up on the ground in soggy grass with her glasses knocked off yesterday, I can tell you this:

Falling hurts.

Is it worth it? Sometimes.

Am I saying to never take a risk? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

What I am saying is that it is okay to be scared.

It is okay to weigh the pros and cons.

It is okay to wait to take that leap.

It is even okay to leap before you're ready. Sometimes that is fully necessary.

But when someone points out they're scared of the plunge, instead of telling them the joys of the soar they may or may not experience, maybe show them how to tie that safety rope.

What if you fly?

I hope you do. I want you to. I will cheer until I'm hoarse for you.

But if you don't. I'll be here. On the ground. Ready to help you up.
