An American President is one of my favorite movies. This book carried the same emotional conflict with a great twist.
What if the president was a single woman?
A President beloved by her nation.
Jessica Hampton is the heir to a political dynasty. For nearly ten years she has given up everything in order to fulfill her late husband's legacy. But now, as her first, and she hopes only, presidential term draws to a close, she wants nothing more than to finish with the dignity her family demands. But when Jessica begins to negotiate an important Middle East accord with the sexy Egyptian Ambassador, being President takes a back seat to being a woman, and she will be forced to choose between the Ambassador she might love, the nation she's sworn to serve, and the family who's given her everything.
A son trapped by his father.
Kamal Masri knows all about being an heir. He's not only Egypt's Ambassador to the U.S., he's the first-born son of one of the world's wealthiest men. His father has controlled his fortune, his career, and now possibly his life. Because when the Egyptian parliament instructs Kamal to negotiate an accord that threatens his father's illegal business dealings, all hell is about to break loose, and Kamal will be forced to choose between the American President he might love, the nation he's sworn to serve, and the father who's given him everything.
I devoured this book over the course of two days. During the second day, every request made by the other humans of this household was met with, "I'm going to finish this book first!"
I followed that up with the Interrupt-me-again-and-die stare which kept them at bay until I could read the last pages and click off my kindle with a triumphant smile.
I loved these characters.
Jessica is an interesting study of a woman trying to do everything expected of her in the shadow of a tragedy without fully exploring what she wants out of life.
Kamal is a strong, alpha-male but avoids the jerk-faceness that I get so sick of. Yes, you're hot and you're rich and none of that matters if you're an ass which Kamal is not. He sticks to hot, rich and gentlemanly (a much, much better combination.)
And, then there are the side characters, like Jessica's best friend (who is from Texas so what's not to like?) and the other members of the Powerplay club who are just as hot and commanding as Kamal.
I usually need at least a little suspense or action (not that kind of action) to balance out the romance. The political intrigue of this plot was just enough for me. I don't get into the complicated workings of espionage and treason. Selena Laurence does an amazing job of sprinkling the politics in a way that drives the story but doesn't bog it down with an agenda or confusing subplots.
In celebration of her release day, Selena is hosting a giveaway.
